Students will learn and practice steep snow climbing skills and self-arresting.

We will meet at the Pikes Peak Highway Tollgate.  

Address: 5089 Pikes Peak Hwy, Cascade, Colorado 80809.  

Uphill gates open: 9am; we need to CARPOOL and be in line before the gate opens.  

We will carpool to the Glen Cove Parking lot; gear up and hike approximately .5 miles to the training area in Glen Cove.  Details will be discussed in class.

$15 per person or $50 for five in a car.  

More specific directions and Carpooling options will be discussed in class.  

Class will finish about 3pm; downhill gates close at 5pm.

The drive to Glen Cove is approximately 45 minutes

Will brief class as a group before hiking into training area.

The first field day trip for Glen Cove will be for all Alpine Snow Mountaineering students and must be completed.

  • Snow travel (snowshoes & alpine crampons)
  • Ice axe management
  • Crampon techniques
  • Terrain evaluation
  • Self arrest
  • Glissading
  • Avalanche risk evaluation

Required Equipment

Climbing helmet, winter alpine-style boots, glasses, alpine crampons, ice axe, avalanche beacon, probe, shovel, snowshoes, ski poles, ten essentials (Wind & Sun protection) and appropriate layered clothing for winter travel.

Water; lunch; snacks for a full day.  

Bring one Large Garbage Bag that may be used to aid "self arrest" practice.
