The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) developed and mapped by the Adventure Cycling Association in the mid 90's is a 2,700-mile primarily gravel road and single-track route that traverses the US Continental divide.
Rick started with a group of five other riders, all fit with rich resumes in outdoor recreational pursuits. However, for a variety of reasons only Rick and one other rider completed the entire route, which started in Banff, CA and ended in Antelope Wells, NM.
Rick will talk about the planning that went into the ride, details about the route, the gear he used including the bike, training for the ride, navigation, water and food, and what worked and what didn’t. Included in his presentation will be amazing photography highlighting his journey. To Rick riding and finishing the GDMBR remains a gift.
About the presenter: Rick, a WI native hitchhiked to Jackson Hole in December 1979, days after graduating from the University of WI Green Bay with a Bachelor of Science degree in Science and Environmental Change/Biology. After that winter alpine skiing, his interests expanded to include back packing, mountaineering, back country skiing, trail running, and cycling.
A father of two daughters and now a grandfather he and Shelly, his wife of 40 years who he met in Jackson Hole and also a strong rider, enjoy an active retirement spending time with daughters in Maine and Hawaii while traveling in between. They also enjoy volunteering for causes of special interest.
Rick plans on exploring Norway this summer skiing and riding north of the Arctic circle.
This free event will be held at Funkwerks. Social from 6:00-6:20 p.m. Program from 6:20-7:50 p.m.
