This course requires, at mimimum, skills taught in Wilderness Trekking School, including navigation skills and exposure to basic self arrest skills. For students taking this course and intending to complete Alpine Climbing School modules, completion of an avalanche course such as AIARE 1 will be required for ACS completion.
Required Equipment
Field day for this course may involve intense winter conditions with cold temperatures, high wind, and snow. In addition to the 10 essentials, knowledge of endurance in such conditions, and adequate clothing and gear are essential.
Specialized equipment required for the course includes:
- Boots: Stiff sole and well insulated mountaineering boots designed to accept crampons, preferably with a groove at the heel to accept crampons with an adjustable heel lever.
- Crampons: Adequate for steep snow, ice, and mixed rock climbing. Preferably steel with horizontal points anti-balling plates, an adjustable heel lever, and either toe basket or wire toe bail.
- Alpine Ice Axe: General use axe - straight or slightly curved, length generally to ankle.
- Harness with double length sling and locking carabiner, or ice axe leash to attach to harness (wrist style leashes are unacceptable).
