TCS Advanced Crevasse Rescue

This course is designed to build on the skills learned in Alpine Climbing School and Glacier Travel.

This course will take place one evening at the American Mountaineering Center and one full field day on Loveland Pass (or similar location in the Front Range).

Wednesday, April 9th: 6-9pm

Sunday, April 13th: all day

Course objectives:

  • Load-releasable knots, hitches, and devices
  • Rappelling into a crevasse to provide first aid
  • Climbing out of a crevasse as a victim or rescuer
  • Middle person rescue

Prerequisites:

  • Completion of CMC HAMS or Glacier Travel course, or equivalent
  • Proficient at 3:1, 5:1 and 6:1 haul systems

Required Equipment

All participants should bring standard glacier rack including ice screw and micro traxion (or equivalent). More details to be sent prior to class. 

The required equipment for prior classes is listed below. This may change when the guide hired to conduct the class finalizes details, but I want to give participants an opportunity to assemble most of the equipment.

Glacier Travel rack
  • 1 mountaineering axe
  • 1 snow picket with 2 carabiners and a sling
  • 12 feet of 6 mm cordelette
  • 1 pulley
  • 4 prusiks
  • 4 locking carabiners
  • 4 non-locking carabiners (any will really do here)
  • 1 double length sling for chest harness
In addition:
  • Micro Traxion (or similar)
  • Tibloc
  • An ice screw may be useful
  • If you are participating in the Expedition Glacier Travel course and have a sled, please bring on Sunday, as well
