This is not an introductory class, and we’ve used the terminology “advanced” because the course builds on skills acquired in other CMC classes. A basic prerequisite for Alpine Climbing School is that you have taken CMC Wilderness Trekking School, or have equivalent experience. There are two additional prerequisite courses for Advanced Snow: Basic Climbing, which addresses basic belaying and climbing techniques, and Intermediate Snow, which addresses snow travel using an ice axe and crampons in an alpine environment. These classes are intended to be taken together, and Advanced Snow is intended to be taken sequentially. Intermediate Snow instruction for self-arrest requires that the student first successfully demonstrate self-arrest skills without crampons. After successfully demonstrating these skills, the progression is to self-arrest with crampons, either in Intermediate Snow or Advanced Snow.

Advanced Snow (previously titled Technical Snow), introduces the use of rope and anchor systems for protection while climbing or descending snow or mixed sections of rock, snow and ice.

Course Objectives:

Skills covered in Advanced Snow include:

  • Self-Arrest With Crampons (Intermediate Snow Review)
  • Roped Climbing and Descending
  • Belaying On Snow
  • Snow Anchor Systems
  • Mixed Climbing on Snow, Rock and Ice
