Winter Hike - Indian Creek Trailhead to Lenny's Rest and Back

A wonderful winter hike in falling snow starting at the upper trailhead parking lot and making fresh tracks along Indian Creek Trail #800. Traveled 9.3 miles with 1,800 feet of elevation gain and enjoyed a turn-around snack break at Lenny's Rest on the Colorado Trail #1776.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • We made the 1st tracks in new snow at 8:30am that started the day before and was still lightly falling. Road to the trailhead coming from Sedalia was wet and slushy in spots, but well-traveled. 4ish inches of fresh snow, at 25-degrees, made for some slips here and there and mud in the afternoon - but nothing too risky.

Our group of 6 enjoyed a leisurely winter hike in fresh snow while enjoying the solitude of the trail less traveled. We were first on the trail and only encountered two other groups (2 backpackers each) the entire time.  Lots of great snow pictures, some old buildings, Lenny's Rest, and a few birds were tally for the day.  While planned for 8 miles from the map plan, the hike was 9.3 miles by GPS track and included some extra distance because the lower TH and corral area was gated off (for the winter) which is where we had planned to start.  One surprise - the day use fee is $10 per posted signs -- even though the Forest Service site still shows $8.

Highly recommended -- but have your map ready at a couple intersections both marked and unmarked to "stay on the trail" you planned :)

Our route was Indian Creek Trail #800, to the "lollipop split" 2-mile trail intersection and continuing clockwise in to a connector trail which we took off of #800 to the Colorado Trail #1776 for a snack break at Lenny's Rest. Then we hiked back to #800 and continued clockwise back to the lollipop split and then back to the trailhead.
