Leader in Training (LIT) Hike – Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain Trail - Mestaa’ėhehe and Chief Mountain

Madaline successfully led this trip with a three unexpected situations which she handled well.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Road to Owl Woman Mountain was clear of all snow.  Shooting Range (federally permitted by USFS)  below OWM was not  occupied.

Road to Chief Mountain had no snow but once the group turned on the trail there were numerous areas where snow remained at 1'-2' depths.  All of these "snow ridges" on the trail had been trod by prior hikers.

Turnaround time was Noon.  Clouds over Chief built up and were heavy with moisture.  At 11,200' the skies started a Graple Dance, then added thunder and lightning to the mix.  The group was about a quarter mile from the base of the peak when turnaround time was reached.

    All members had rain gear.

As the group descended, snow and rain ceased.

The group returned to the TH.
