Trip Report

Intermediate Snowshoe – Ophir Creek Campground

On a sunny but windy day, we snowshoed a lollipop loop: first on snowmobile tracks, then an old road bed until crossing the creek and going off-trail back up to the road, whence we followed a recently-made snowmobile trail back to the beginning.

  • Road rough but passable

The snowmobile tracked part was pretty boring, but up through the ravine it's beautiful, with cliff overhanging the creek. The dog discovered some interesting tracks, which were not very clear, being several days old, with melting. We thought they were likely bobcat--not big enough for puma. Crossing the creek in deep snow was a bit challenging, as was the route finding up the narrow creek canyon that followed a power line and fence line. We stopped for a snack/lunch break after 2 hours. It was only another 1/2 hour back to the cars. Several people agreed that they loved the off-track part best.
