Hiking – Peak 9 via the "Sky Chutes"

Do not park by the dirt lot near Conoco. You'll save a mile each way on this trip by parking in the FAR EAST LOT and crossing the bridge there. CMCer's don't want to walk on the paved Colorado Mtn Trail and this starting point will skip that.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • the entire route was dry and only a small part was off trail.  the only off trail is at the point the Wheeler trail meets the pass (at the ridge) and you head South across the tundra, up toward the the first false summit of Peak 9. Then the trail picks up again at the summit in our group photo with the long rods on top of it. That trail heads south along the ridge toward Peak 9 and you can see it in the background of our group photo (left side of the ridge).  For a short distance (say 200') some of us you held on to rocks now and again, but for most "c" hikers they may not.  Spectacular views of Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, Peak 10, Vail Pass etc.  We had no wind and basted on the top for 30 mins.  We have Abbie Gentry to thanks for this trip.

P.S. the tundra this time of year was very colorful and enjoyed by all.  Also very few bikers and hikers.
