Trip Report

Hiking – Almagre Mountain

A great group of people for what turned out to be really good weather and conditions. 4WD road conditions to the trailhead were a bit rough but the route-finding to the first summit was straight-forward with clear trail over much of the remaining terrain.

  • Road recommended for high clearance only
  • We started straight up the side for the first summit where the abandoned communications shack and antennas are still in place. The bushwhacking was straightforward with the group spreading out, where possible, to reduce impact. From the abandoned communications facility to the next summit was easily negotiable by trail and road, part of it leading us across the abandoned dam.

To get close to the proposed trailhead/starting point requires a high clearance, 4wd vehicle. We had two such vehicles but one of them stayed a mile lower as the road conditions were very difficult. As such, four of our group walked the additional mile uphill to accommodate this. Three walked the additional mile backdown the road at day's end.

Weather was comfortable most of the day with on-and-off cloud cover making conditions more enjoyable for what were some very high temperatures around the state.

Some in the group walked extra distances so as to "touch" some of the various highpoints along the ridge.

It was a good group of seven people who all seemed to enjoy the day!
