Hike to Wheeler Peak 13,167’, New Mexico’s highest summit in the Wheeler Wilderness Area and the Questa Ranger District of the Carson National Forest. A Class 1-2 hike that starts at Williams Lake Trail gently progressing for two miles through forest and a large meadow expanse until the junction with Wheeler Peak Trail that eventually leads to above tree line on a dirt trail and through areas of talus before cresting a false summit and then reaching the true summit marked by an impressive metal plaque. Option of hiking to Williams Lake before returning to the trailhead. 8 miles, 2950' gain, difficult hike
