Vogel Canyon Loop
Part of the Comanche National Grasslands, the Loop combine four trails through a fascinating historical area with 500-800 year old Indian rock art and remnants of old homesteads.
The historical Vogel Canyon, south of LaJunta, has several displays of ancient native petroglyphs thought to date back 800 years, and the remnants of the 1870's Barlow and Sanderson Stageline that ran from LaJunta to Trinidad. This little known canyon was etched by the Purgatoire River. Several springs supported the activity in this area.
This is an easy hike combining four short trails for an approximately 5 mile hike, with very little change in elevation. Combine Vogel Canyon Trail, Overlook Trail, Prairie Trail, and Mesa Trail to form a 5 mile loop.
Picnic tables, and a vault toilet are located near the trailhead. No drinking water is available.
