South Creek Trail

The South Creek Trail (#1321) runs 6.5 miles between Co Hwy 165 and Pueblo Mountain Park in Beulah, with a 2740' elevation change. This trail links with others at the top, middle and bottom, which pass remnants of the Boy Scouts' Camp Burch and the Squirrel Creek Lodge. A car shuttle is recommended.

The western or upper trailhead is found about mile 15 in Hwy 165, about .7 miles north of Greenhill Divide, the western end of CO 78 and just south of the parking lot for St. Charles trail. With care it can be driven .05 mi. to a parking area.

The trail follows an old road for .4 mi., then turns left, crossed a creek, and climbs 500' to a wonderful rocky outcrop. It soon begins a steep descent; as motorcycles are allowed, gravel switchbacks can be slippery. At 3 mi., a Coupler trail #1386 branches left, connecting in .5 mile to the Squirrel Creek trail and thence to Davenport Campground, Dome Rock trail, Second Mace trail and Carhart trail to Pueblo Mountain Park. Two miles further down South Creek is the remains of Camp Burch. Here you abandon the creek and climb on the Ranger Trail (currently under re-construction) to meet the Tower and Mace trails in Pueblo Mountain Park.

At the top of the trail, old roads intertwine and social trails connect to the gravel pit at mile 1 of Co. 78, or loop back to the trailhead (Nadia Brelje Memorial Loop).

The east end of the trail is best found at the trailhead for the Tower trail in the Park, at 9112 Mountain Park road in Beulah.
