Shelf Road
The Shelf Road climbing area is a limestone climbing area about 15 miles north of Canon City with over 1000 bolted sport routes, mostly single pitch in the 5.10 to 5.12 range, with some moderate routes and a handful of trad routes. It is on BLM land with a couple of campgrounds and is a popular non-summer climbing area.
Getting There:
Shelf Road is located off Fremont County route 9 about 15 miles north of Canon City, Colorado. Get on Field Ave heading north through town, which will lead you onto 9 north. Take 9 north for just over 9 miles to the two entrances into the climbing area on the left. The first entrance will be to Sand Gulch, which has a camping area and climbing access, and the second entrance is a short distance up 9, also on the left, and leads to the Bank campground and other climbing areas.
Approach:
Most approaches for the climbing crags are on established trails down to and then along the cliff bases. There are multiple cliff bands throughout the area. Approach times are generally less than 30 minutes.
