Ouray Via Ferrata

The Ouray Via Ferrata is located in the Ouray Ice Park gorge and is on property owned by the City of Ouray. Via ferrata means "iron road" in Italian.

Refer to the Ouray Via Ferrata website for information on rules and regulations and required equipment. The OVF has significant exposure so this is not a good trip for those who are afraid of heights. Reversing the route is not permitted. There are 2 routes that may be taken. The Upstream route is longer and more strenuous that the Downstream route. 

Downstream - 1 mile - 200 ft elevation gain

Upstream - 2 miles - 200 ft elevation gain

The origin of via ferratas dates back to the nineteenth century, but they are often associated with the World War I when several were built in the Dolomite mountain region of Italy to aid with the movement of troops.
