Mt Evans/Blue Sky
An iconic mountain visible from Denver, situated in the middle of its own Mt Evans Wilderness Area. The mountain itself is best accessible from the north, on CO-103/CO-5. The road up to the mountain is closed early September through mid-June.
Summit Lake, a Denver Mountain Park, lies at the mountain foot and is a popular tourist stop to see wild goats and sheep. There is a pay parking lot and restroom there (Nat Park Service passes work). The road past the lake continues on up to near the mountain summit.
In addition to climbing straight up the mountain face, one can hike up on a trail starting on the west side of Summit Lake over Mt Spaulding and then scramble up the back of Mt Evans on a semi-visible boulder trail. Nearby to the southwest, Mt Bierstadt's Sawtooth or a bushwhack from the Mt Bierstadt TH provide other access points. Upper Chicago Lake lies way below Evans to the northeast and is connected to the Summit Lake area by a very steep scramble trail.
To the Southeast, the Summit Flats Trail leads into the greater Blue Sky/Evans Wilderness Area, allowing many trail connections all the way to Evergreen. Abyss lake is way below the back of the mountain and best accessed from the Abyss Trail.
