Mt Elbert
Mt Elbert (14,438') is the highest peak in Colorado. At the summit, you'll get great views of the Sawatch Range and Leadville.
North Elbert Trail (Northeast Ridge): 9.5 miles, 4,700 feet of elevation gain
The trailhead is on Halfmoon Creek Road, which is easily travelled by a 2 wheel drive car. The Elbert Creek Campground is right nearby. The trail follows the Continental Divide Trail for about a mile, then the Mt Elbert trail leaves the Continental Divide Trail to begin the climb to the northeast ridge. Follow the trail along the ridge to the summit.
South Elbert Trail (Snowshoe): 1.8 miles, 860 feet of elevation gain
This is not the South Elbert summer trail to the summit. This is a moderate winter snowshoe route on Forest Road 125 leading to the south summit route. Views of Mt. Hope, Quail, the Twin Peaks, and the Twin Lakes. Look for evidence of a large herd of elk that wander the lower flanks of Mt. Elbert.
Starting from Shore Pretty Overlook, ascend through varied ecosystems of sagebrush and aspen. The trail steepens and then flattens to reveal views of Quail and Hope mountains. The trail steepens again and travels around a hillside to a Bartlett Gulch with possible evidence of beaver activity.
Once again, the trail steepens and ascends through conifers and intersects with Corske Creek. This is a good place to turn around and return the way you came.
