Mt Bierstadt
Mt Bierstadt (14,065') located in the Mount Blue Sky Wilderness near Georgetown, CO. Mt Bierstadt can be linked with Mt Evans via the sawtooth.
Mt Bierstadt via West Slopes: 7.8 miles, 2,850 feet of elevation gain
Starting from the trailhead on the east side of the top of Guanella Pass, the hike starts with a slight downhill grade through a marsh where there might be a possible moose sighting: keep your eyes peeled.
The trail then ascends through a series of switchbacks along a well-maintained trail. Once past the bushes, panoramic views open up of the Sawtooth ridge and surrounding mountains. After some hiking, you arrive at a flat meadow at approximately 13,800.
At this point the trail becomes a little steeper, but not significantly harder. A fraction of a mile later, you’ve made it to the summit.
The summit affords stunning views of the surrounding mountains and alpine lakes.
Retrace steps on the downhill.
Summit Lake to Mt Bierstadt via Sawtooth: 5.3 miles, 2,450 feet of elevation gain
This hike has significant exposure, requires scrambling skills, and takes approximately 5 hours to complete. The optional side hike to Mt. Evans adds 3.9 miles and 1,000 feet of elevation.
Starting at Summit Lake hike up the Spalding Trail to the saddle between Spalding and Mt. Evans. Leave the trail and hike west on the 13,600 ft. contour to a modest cairn at 39.5916, -105.6655. Heading south, drop approx. 200 feet on the loose scree goat-path that joins the ridge between Sawtooth and Bierstadt. From the low point on the ridge follow the exposed rock ridge to the peak of Bierstadt. Return to your car by reversing the route.
