Mt Baker

Mt Baker is a 10,781 ft. active glaciated volcano in the North Cascades. All climbs require travel over glaciated terrain and ascend at least 7000 ft. from trailhead to summit. It is the 3rd highest summit in the state of Washington and the iciest mountain in the Cascade Range. More than 100 square kilometers of glaciers and permanent snow fields cover the mountain.

The three most popular routes on Mt. Baker are Coleman-Deming, Easton Glacier, and North Ridge.

Easton Glacier:

  • Approach: Park Butte trailhead
  • Distance: 12.5 miles (20.1 km) round trip from trailhead to summit 
  • Elevation gain: 7,500 feet (2,286 m) from trailhead to summit 
  • Difficulty: Beginner 
  • Duration: 8-10 hours round trip from camp to summit (2 days recommended) 

Coleman-Deming

  • Approach: Heliotrope trailhead (road closure as of 2022 adds 2mi and 2k feet of elevation gain).
  • Distance: 11.8 miles (19 km) round trip from the trailhead to the summit 
  • Elevation gain: 7,300 feet (2,225 m) of elevation gain from trailhead to summit
  • Difficulty: Beginner 
  • Duration: 8-10 hours round trip from camp to summit (2 days recommended) 

North Ridge

  • Approach: Heliotrope trailhead (road closure as of 2022 adds 2mi and 2k feet of elevation gain).
  • Distance: 16 miles (25.7 km) round trip from trailhead to summit 
  • Elevation gain: 7,300 feet (2,225 m) from camp to summit 
  • Difficulty: Moderate ice climb
  • Duration: 10-12 hours round trip from camp to summit (recommend 2+ days)
