Lion Canyon Trail
From the primitive Oak Creek campground, the Lion Canyon trail USFS #1329 follows an intermittent creek, climbing 1500' in 2.9 miles to Locke Park, where old pine trees shade a corner of a meadow overlooking the Sangre de Cristo range and the Wet Valley.
Lion Canyon Trail to Locke Park: 5.8 miles, 1,500 feet of elevation gain
The Oak Creek campground is located about 15 miles up the Oak Creek Grade from Canon City. (There are no facilities or water at the campground.) The canyon is narrow with rocky outcrops. The upper part of the trail has a lot of aspen, making this a favorite fall hike. At Locke Park, it joins FS road274, connecting over 10 miles with various other FS roads. This trail is officially the north end of the Highline trail #1329 which ends many miles later at the Lewis Creek trail FS #1331 trailhead on Hwy 96. Motorcycles are allowed.
