Geneva Creek Iron Fens

This interesting geological area is registered as a Colorado State Natural Area with large areas of peat-forming wetlands quite reddish in color due to the iron in the ground water draining from surrounding calcareous rocks.

The Iron Fens are a rare and extremely sensitive habitat. It is required to stay on the trail within the fens to protect the sensitive ecosystem. Dogs are also required to be on leash.
For more information on the area, please visit: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3803512.pdf
In order to reach the trailhead, a high clearance 4WD vehicle is recommended. During the winter months, a gate closes Guanella Pass Road. The gate is installed at Duck Creek Picnic area, near the beginning of the road (Country Road 1038) leading to this trailhead. You can still reach this trail in the winter months, but the road closure adds considerable distance to your trip.

This SEASONAL ROAD CLOSURE: Guanella Pass closes annually between November - March. For more information, please visit https://www.codot.gov/travel/scenic-byways/north-central/guanella-pass. and https://www.clearcreekcounty.us/689/Guanella-Pass-Information
