Galloping Goose Trail
A gently-graded rail-to-trail path near Telluride. Good for hiking, biking, nordic skiing, and snowshoeing. USFS #499.
This trail follows the old Rio Grande Southern narrow-gauge rail line from the 10,222' Lizard Head TH back toward the town of Telluride 8,750'. The trail is groomed in the winter.
Surfaces: Unpaved Road Dirt Two-track Road
Although the trail is relatively flat, there are many opportunities to combine portions of the RR-grade trail with more challenging areas off-trail, some on roads. Many combinations are possible and you can start your trip in Telluride. The Telluride Visitor Center provides maps and advice.
