Comanche Peak
Hike the Comanche Lake Trail #1345 to Comanche Pass at 12,800’ in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. From the pass go off trail to ascend steep tundra and talus on the north ridge of Class 2 Comanche Peak to summit at 13,277’. Option of stopping at the Comanche Lake at the base of the peak on the return trip. Out and back 11.6 miles, 3,777 gain, moderately difficult Class D hike.
Experience a beautiful 13er in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range outside of Westcliffe. Start at the Comanche Trailhead. Follow the Comanche Trail #1345 in San Isabel National Forest to a junction with the Rainbow Trail. Go left at the junction to enter Sangre de Cristo Wilderness Area to continue on the Comanche Trail for 4.3 miles until a junction before Comanche Lake at 11,720’. Stay straight on Comanche Trail for another 1.5 miles to reach Comanche Pass at 12,800’. From the pass, go off trail to ascend a steep slope of tundra with areas of talus up the north ridge of Comanche Peak to reach a summit cairn at 13,277’. Return from the summit to Comanche Pass back onto Comanche Trail. Follow Comanche trail back down to the trailhead. Make an optional stop at Comanche Lake by turning right at the junction onto a short side-trail 1.5 miles below Comanche Pass. RT 11.6 miles, 3,777 gain with a duration of about 7-8 hours.
