Colorado River Headwaters Byway Bike Route

A network of gravel roads, lightly traveled county roads, and bike paths following the Colorado River from its source in RMNP to Glenwood Springs. A great route for a multi day bike tour.

Designated one of only 13 National Scenic Byways in 2005, the Colorado River Headwaters Byway for auto touring runs 80 miles from Grand Lake, passing through Kremmling, ending at State Bridge on CO-131.

The bike route closely follows the Byway from Grand Lake, then takes riders all the way to Glenwood Springs and beyond.  To minimize riding on the busy and fast US Hwy 40, there are variations while in Grand and Eagle Counties to keep riders off the Byway and on county roads instead, including:
  • Grand CR-55 Cottonwood Pass
  • CR-20 between Hot Sulfur Springs and Parshall (to avoid Byers Canyon)
  • CRs 3 & 33 around Williams to Kremmling
  • CR-3 from Kremmling to Bond
  • CO-131 from Bond to McCoy
  • Eagle CR-301 from McCoy to Dotsero
  • I-70 frontage road from Dotsero to the Glenwood Canyon Bikepath East Trailhead
  • Follow the Path to Glenwood Springs.
  • Can continue biking all the way to Utah OR
  • To return, take the Amtrak from Glenwood to either Granby or Fraser, or bus back to Denver.
