Capulin Volcano National Monument

Capulin Volcano National Monument preserves the Capulin Mountain—one of the finest examples of a cinder cone volcano in the United States. You can drive to the top and hike on and around it. It last erupted about 60,000 years ago.

Capulin Volcano has a paved road spiraling the rim and paved trails into and around the crater. The monument is located between Raton and Clayton, NM.
There are several short but dramatic hiking trails on and around the volcano. From the highest point on the crater rim trail on a clear day, visitors can see formations in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. From late June to early August, thousands of ladybugs cover trees and bushes at the top of the volcano.
There is a per car entry fee of $20 (2024), which allows access to the road and the hiking trails.
General info and hiking info are available at the National Park Service site.
