Captain Mountain Trail

Seldom-visited trail that starts at the back of Echo Lake Campground with a long downhill, crosses several running creeks, and eventually ends near Evergreen in the Mt Blue Sky (formerly Mt Evans) Wilderness. There are several thick aspen groves and open grassy meadows.

This R/P describes an out and back hike to the base of Captain Mountain, which can be scrambled up for an additional .5 miles. Thereafter, the trail enters a State Wildlife Area requiring every hiker to have a pass, and there are seasonal hunting closures.

There are a number of shorter OB possibilities such as turning around at Melvina Creek.
