4-Day: McCurdy Park from Lost Park TH

This 28 mile loop with 5,600 vertical feet includes both the spectacular and unique upper Lost Creek Valley and the scenic high portion of the Brookside McCurdy Trail near the tops of McCurdy Mountain and Bison Peak, enjoy the unusual geology and South Park views of the Lost Creek Wilderness.

Suggested Backpacking Section (BPX) itinerary for 4-day trip to be used for CMC trips led by BPX leaders for BPX members.

Day one:  Hike on the Wigwam Trail (#609) over a low pass to Wigwam Park and take Goose Creek Trail (#612) to McCurdy Park Trail (#628) and to Refrigerator Gulch and camp. (approx. 12.2  miles/+1300, -2400 feet)

Day two:  Hike on McCurdy Park Trail up and down to Lost Creek for a wade across, helping each other. Next climb from Lost Creek to McCurdy Park. Camp at McCurdy Park.  (approx. 6 miles/+2700,-750 feet)

Day three:  A short climb from McCurdy Park to Brookside McCurdy Trail (#607) where there is some up and down but relatively little change in elevation.  There will be a possibility to camp just below Bison Peak or further down below Bison Pass.  Possibly summit Bison Peak. (approx. 6 miles/+1500, -1400 feet)

Day four: Hike downhill from Bison Pass to the trailhead. (approx. 4 miles/-1000 feet)

Driving Directions: Take US 285 over Kenosha Pass and turn right on CO Road 56\Lost Park Road and drive 20 miles to Lost Park Campground and Trailhead. Note: Some years the lost park road is not yet open in late May.  If this is the case, plan an alternate loop from a different trailhead.

General Requirements:  Prepare to hike four days and camp three nights, although a group decision can be made to complete the descent from Bison Pass to Lost Park Trailhead on the third day.
