BPX 3-Day: Rogers Pass Lake from East Portal TH

A moderate 8-mile out-and-back takes you to Rogers Pass Lake in the James Peak Wilderness, in the shadow of the Continental Divide. This 3-day route allows time for fishing, exploring nearby Heart Lake, and even climbing to the CDT via Rogers Pass and then possibly on to summit James Peak, a nearby 13er.

Hike to a beautiful lake in the James Peak Wilderness just below the Continental Divide with great views and explore exceptional terrain. Spend time at Heart Lake at timberline.

Suggested Backpacking Section (BPX) itinerary for 3-day trip to be used for CMC trips led by BPX leaders for BPX members.

Start at the East Portal Trailhead at Moffat Tunnel near Rollinsville. 

Day 1. Hike on the South Boulder Creek Trail, #900 to Rogers Pass Lake and establish camp.(4 miles/+2000’).

Route Day 1

Day 2. Fish Rogers or Heart Lake, relax in camp, hike on the Continental Divide Trail or climb James Peak.

Day 3. Return to trailhead (4 miles/-2000’)

Driving Directions:  From Nederland, travel south for 4.5 miles on Colorado Highway 119 to Rollinsville. Turn west onto the gravel Gilpin County Road 16 and continue eight miles to the Moffat Tunnel. A large parking area is available at the East Portal Trailhead.

General Requirements: There are multiple options. Hiking above the lake is above tree line.  Care is needed concerning weather.
