3-Day: Ptarmigan Lake from Ptarmigan Lake TH
Hike to a beautiful lake surrounded by dramatic peaks including Mount Yale. The lake has good fishing for cutthroat trout. Only 5 miles and 1,200 vertical feet total.
Suggested Backpacking Section (BPX) itinerary for 3-day trip to be used for CMC trips led by BPX leaders for BPX members:
Day 1. After driving to the trail head, climb on a very easy Ptarmigan Lake Trail (#1444) to a location just below Ptarmigan Lake near timberline. Here establish the base camp for the next two nights. (2.5 miles/+1,200').
Day 2. A day to enjoy what this area offers. The group can take a short stroll up to Ptarmigan Lake, can fish the lake, can explore the area, climb any of the numerous 12,000' and 13,000' peaks, or relax at camp.
Day 3. Hike back to the trailhead. (2.5 miles/-1200’).
Driving Directions: From the Buena Vista traffic light, travel 15 miles west on CR 306. The sign and parking area is on the left.
