2-Day: American Lakes from American Lakes TH

Moderate trail, out and back, to the American Lakes area near Cameron Pass. Roundtrip to the lakes (11,300ft) is approximately 8 miles and 1,500ft elevation gain.

Hike to the scenic American Lakes (Michigan Lake), with views of the Diamond Peaks to the north, as well as Iron Mountain, Thunder Mountain, Lulu Mountain, Mount Richthofen, Static Peak, and the Nokhu Crags.

Side trips in the area include Thunder Pass which is on the border with the Rocky Mountain National Park and Snow Lake.

Note that a State Parks permit is required to park at the trailhead.

Suggested Backpacking Section (BPX) itinerary for 2-day trip to be used for CMC trips led by BPX leaders for BPX members.

Day 1: Drive to American Lakes TH. Hike to the American Lakes and find camping (3.7 miles and 1,500 vertical feet). Option to hike to Snow Lake and/or Thunder Pass today or tomorrow.
