4-Day: Sugarite Canyon State Park Campground
Sugarite Canyon State Park is a state park of New Mexico. It features a historic early-20th century coal-mining camp and natural scenery at the border of the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains. The park is located on the Colorado–New Mexico state line 6 miles (9.7 km) northeast of Raton, New Mexico.
Suggested Backpacking Section (BPX) itinerary for 4-day trip to be used for CMC trips led by BPX leaders for BPX members.
Day 1: Carpool and drive to Sugarite Canyon State Park, Gambel Oak Group Camping Area. NOTE: Reservations for the site are highly recommended. Check-in time is 4:00 PM. Spend the afternoon relaxing by Lake Maloya, cooking, or exploring Sugarite Canyon State Park.
Day 2: Get an early start and hike to the summit of Fishers Peak in nearby Fishers Peak State Park (14.2 miles, +3,565 / -3,565 ft.). Stop for dinner in downtown Trinidad on the way back, or bring your own dinner and eat at camp.
Day 3: Options include: visit a state park, trout fishing, paddling, and/or visit downtown Trinidad. Group barbeque for dinner at Trinidad Lake State Park.
Day 4: Pack up camp and drive back
