BPX 3-Day: Finch Lake from Finch Lake TH

Finch Lake (9,910 ft.) is located 4.4 miles / 1,769 ft. from the Finch Lake Trailhead in Rocky Mountain National Park. This quiet lake offers views west towards Copeland Mountain.

Finch Lake is a 4.4 mile hike through pines, aspen glades, and wildflower laden meadows to a sub-alpine lake where the forest surrounds its shores. The Finch Lake trail is a great choice for those who prefer solitude as it’s one of the lesser traveled trails in the Wild Basin region of RMNP.

The trail rises gradually through lodgepole and ponderosa pine trees.  At 2.25 miles we reach an intersection called "confusion junction" where we'll go left.   
As we continue along the trail it becomes a little steeper until we reach the high point of 10,117 ft., and then it there will be a short descent to the campsite at 9 ,910 ft.

Suggested Backpacking Section (BPX) itinerary for 3-day trip to be used for CMC trips led by BPX leaders for BPX members.

Day 1: Meet at CMC lot , drive to the Finch Lake Trailhead (approx  1.5 hours).  Hike to the Finch Lake camp site, 4.4 miles and 1,769 ft. Set up camp for 2 nights.  After setting up camp, we can enjoy the beauty at Finch lake and/or take an optional hike to Pear Lake  (3.6 miles / 742 ft.)

Day 2: Day hike to explore the area, or hike to nearby lakes Coney lake and Hutchinson Lake (7.1 miles / 1,500 ft.)

  1. All reservations for summer season RMNP backpacking wilderness camping trips must be booked via www.recreation.gov. Reservations for all summer backpacking camping permits will open on March 1 at 8:00 a.m. MT
  2. RMNP requires Bear canisters.
