This hike to Devil’s Head Lookout is a showstopper from start to finish, weaving through fragrant pine forests, sun-drenched clearings, and dramatic rock formations that hint at the grandeur to come. As we ascend, anticipation builds until we reach the famous staircase—143 steps of pure Colorado character—leading to the historic fire tower balanced high above the Rampart Range. From this airy perch, the world stretches out in all directions, with sweeping views that span from Pikes Peak to the distant plains. For those craving a bit more adventure and a touch of solitude, a detour along the Zinn Trail offers a delicious bonus. This peaceful side path winds gently through the woods before unveiling a second overlook—quieter, lesser-known, and arguably just as breathtaking. Here, away from the crowds, we can savor the grandeur of the landscape in near silence, with only the whisper of the wind and the rustle of aspens for company. This is a hike that delivers both drama and discovery. We'll find a comfortable stop for lunch/snack. Our pace will be determined by the strength, stamina, and endurance of the group. Overall ~4 miles and ~1000 ft elevation gain. (Devils Head Tower Lookout - CalTopo)
