This will be an out-n-back snowshoe hike starting along the almost flat Michigan Ditch Trail for about 2.5 miles. At this point we'll head SE on the American (Michigan) Lakes trail. We begin to ascend along the American Lakes trail which follows the Michigan River. At about 3.25 miles the winter trail deviates from the summer trail and continues ascending along the river. The lower lake will come into view at about 4 miles. From this point we'll make our way over to the lakes and find a comfortable spot for lunch/snack. After we regain our energy, we'll have the option to continue up to Thunder Pass to our SE. The winter views from Thunder Pass into Rocky Mountain National Park offer a glimpse into the rugged grandeur and natural splendor of Colorado's high country. Whether you're seeking solitude, adventure, or simply a moment of awe-inspiring beauty, Thunder Pass delivers an unforgettable experience that celebrates the timeless allure of the mountains. From Thunder Pass we'll make our way back along the American Lakes winter trail to Michigan Ditch and the trailhead. This route avoids avalanche risk areas. Our pace will be comfortable for all group members. Overall this hike is ~9 mile and ~1300 ft elevation gain. (Michigan Lakes - Snowshoe - CalTopo)
