This loop snowshoe hike starts at the Leland Creek trailhead and heads west up the Spruce Creek trail. We'll ascend ~1300 ft in the first ~3 miles. Once we reach that point we'll enjoy a modest descent for the next ~4.5 miles, back to the trailhead. Along the way we'll keep an eye out for Bottle Peak (11,582 feet), Ptarmigan Peak (11,772 feet), and Morse Mountain (9,866 feet). This route is mostly in the trees and avoids the high avalanche danger areas. We'll find a sunny spot to stop for lunch/snack. Our pace will be comfortable for all participants. Overall ~7.5 miles and ~1400 ft elevation gain. (Fraser Experimental Forest - West Loop - CalTopo)
Established in 1937 by the Forest Service, the Fraser Experimental Forest comprises 23,000 acres. This outdoor research laboratory was first established to study the relationship between forest management and water yield. Today, the Fraser Experimental Forest is a site for research on silviculture, riparian habitats, invasives, insects, soils, and other topics, in addition to water quantity and quality.
