Hiking – Rifle Mountain Park
This is an exploratory trip to visit the incredible ice caves in Rifle Mountain Park, just north of Rifle Co. We'll round out the day with a visit to nearby Rifle Falls State Park. Rifle Falls won't be completely frozen but the mist from the Falls creates beautiful hoarfrost on the surrounding vegetation. Great photographic opportunities at both sites!

This is an EXPLORATORY trip to explore the Ice Caves in Rifle Mountain Park, just north of Rifle Co. The ice caves (as many as four) are located just off of the road and Koper's Trail. So the distances and elevation gain are uncertain but not large - the difficulty (and adventure) is in navigating around and inside the ice caves and in reaching some of them. TRACTION DEVICES and a HELMET are REQUIRED. Trekking poles, a headlamp and gaiters are strongly suggested. Bring your snowshoes, too, though we may turn out not needing them.
We'll round out the day with a visit to nearby Rifle Falls State Park. Rifle Falls won't be completely frozen but there should still be plenty of ice, and the mist from the Falls creates beautiful hoarfrost on the surrounding vegetation.
There's a $10 entry fee for Rifle Mountain Park - bring cash.
Rifle Falls State Park separately charges a $10 fee - brin your state parks pass if you have one.
This trip is for Bobcat members from the Denver and Boulder groups though members from other areas will be accommodated as space is available.
