This is only the lower part of Barr Trail, about 3.5 miles one-way, to look at the remains of the Fremont Forest Experimental Station site. We'll start hiking at 9:15 and meet at the Barr Tail lot. Options for carpooling or using the shuttle (to lower the cost of parking) will be sent out closer to the date. We should be back in time for Super Bowl parties, if that's your jam.
The Fremont Experimental Forest operated from 1909 to 1935, just off Barr Trail and about a mile from the top of the Manitou Incline. Foundations, tree tags and a few other remnants are still visible.
Barr Trail is well-traveled, even in winter so expect snow packed and icy trails. Traction devices are a must on this one. The elevation gain on the first three miles is significant - this is a challenging hike. The 1/4 mile from Barr to the forest may not need to be broken so wear your gaiters. We'll also go a bit farther into the woods to find some of the nearly century-old tags still hanging on the trees. Pack a thermos with a warm beverage.
Required Equipment
Traction, gaiters, poles. Something warm to drink.
