Hiking – Peak 9 (Breckenridge)
Take advantage of a break in the weather before the SKY Chutes fill with snow to climb Peak 9 (13,207') or Peak 8 (13,005') in the 10 mile range depending on the conditions. The leader has climbed Peak 9 many times, but the last part of the hike up Peak 8 is exploratory.

Meet at Wooly Mammoth Section BB at 6:00 am for a prompt 6:15 am departure. We will follow I-70 to CO 91, and park in the dirt area near the Conoco Station close to the I-70 interchange.
This hike is intended to bag another peak (or two) during a break in the weather. Note that Peak 8 is a "new" 13er - previously it was listed at 12,987', but the most recent data puts it at 13,005'.
From the trailhead, we'll follow the Wheeler Trail to a saddle between Peak 8 and Peak 9. As we follow the trail, we'll cross some significant avalanche chutes (the avalanches crossed the CO 91 in 2019). Once we get to the saddle, we'll be off trail for the rest of the hike. If we do both peaks, we'll add about 2 miles and 700' of elevation gain for a total of about 11 miles with 4000' of elevation gain - a long, difficult day.
The hike to Peak 9 includes Class 2 scrambling, and a spot with some mild exposure. Since I haven't been up Peak 8, I assume there will be some Class 2 hiking and potentially some rocks at the top.
Required Equipment
Winter is approaching quickly. Therefore warm layers, waterproof boots, a hat, wind protection, gloves, microspikes, and a way to keep your water from freezing are required.
