Geneva Creek Iron Fens

Trip

Hiking – Geneva Creek Iron Fens

Fens are peat bogs fed by groundwater. These fens are so iron rich they have formed large expanses of barren limonite, a hydrous iron oxide mineral. A rare geological and biological phenomenon, the area is now protected as a Clear Creek County Open Space and Colorado Natural Area. Be prepared to cross wetlands and numerous streams as we explore this fascinating area.

We will meet at Hampden & Wadsworth P&R at 6:50 to organize carpool and then leave at 7:00. The dirt road from Guanella Pass to the TH is quit bumpy for about 30 minutes. RAV 4 and Subarus will do but if you have some sturdier cars please bring.
