Hiking – Fourth of July Trailhead

Lake Dorothy from 4th of July Trailhead

  • Moderate
  • High Point Elevation: 12,061 ft
  • Pace: Moderate (1.5 avg moving speed)

We will meet at 6:30 am at the parking lot east of the CMC Building, aka "Coors Tek", and be on the road by 6:45 am.  Here’s a link to it in Google Maps ( https://goo.gl/maps/VLqhSXXK5D52 ).

The trailhead for this hike is the 4th of July Trailhead, west of Nederland.  Here’s a Google Maps Link for it:  https://goo.gl/maps/sNNUg2YZhi9FUMGV8   The last 4 miles of the road to the trailhead are a bit rough, so our drivers will need vehicles with decent clearance.  The parking at this trailhead fills up quickly, hence the early start.

From the 4th of July Trailhead, we will follow the Arapaho Pass Trail into the Indian Peaks Wilderness to Lake Dorothy.  On the way up the trail we will have several stream crossings on rocks, lots of wildflowers in a typical year at this time, great views of Mt Jasper and Suoth Arapaho Peak, and some old mining equipment.  At Lake Dorothy, we will be rewarded with great views of Mt Neva which looms over the lake

Required Equipment

Remember as part of your 10 essentials bring your rain gear, windbreaker (waterproof outer layer), lunch or a snack for while we’re at the lake, and some type of energy snacks that can be eaten while walking.  Also bring lots of water since we will be above timberline.

If you use hiking sticks, please bring them.  There are a couple water crossings that involve rock-hopping where hiking sticks can help with balance.  Should be lots of wildflowers, too!
