Day 1 drive to the Cataract Gulch trailhead south of Lake City. 161 miles one way from Grand Junction. From the Cataract Gulch trailhead hike to the vicinity of Cataract Lake and camp, approximately 4.5 miles and 2600' backpacking one way. On Day 2 hike off trail Tundra Top 13450 and Cataract Peak 13522 approximately 3.1 miles and 2600' hiking one way. The leader has not done this hike but expects this hike to be mostly over tundra and scree.  Day 3 can be either a hike to peak 13580 approximately 2.6 miles and 1700' hiking one way or pack up and return to the trailhead depending on the group.  Similar hiking conditions expected to this peak. Individual food and camping gear. No dogs. There are reports of moose sightings in the Cataract Lake area.  Please register with the leader. Total mileage and elevation listed is approximate and does not include the optional peak on day 3. Handies Peak Wilderness and Gunnison National Forest. There may be archery hunters in this area in September.
