Hiking – Boulder Open Space - Royal Arch

This hike to Royal Arch from Chautauqua Park in Boulder, Colorado, is a challenging ~4-mile loop route through steep, rocky terrain and dense forest. As we ascend, the trail offers stunning views of the Flatirons and the city below, culminating in the impressive Royal Arch, a natural rock formation with sweeping vistas of Boulder and the surrounding landscape.

Carpool Place & Time: Meet at the Eldorado Canyon PnR at 7:30am, for no later than 7:45am departure (Eldorado Canyon Park and Ride - Google Maps)

We'll then carpool to Chautauqua Park (free parking for Boulder County residents) (Chautauqua Park - Google Maps)

This hike to Royal Arch from Chautauqua Park begins with an ascent on the Chautauqua Trail, offering open views of Boulder and the surrounding foothills. We then transition onto the steeper Ski Jump Trail, winding through a mix of grasslands and forested areas with glimpses of the Flatirons. After merging with the Bluebell Baird and Flatirons Loop Trails, we ascend through rocky terrain on the Royal Arch Trail, traversing Sentinel Pass, a small but scenic saddle offering a brief respite before the final push to Royal Arch. The return via the Bluebell Trail completes a loop that captures the rugged beauty and diverse landscapes of the area. We will find a comfortable spot at/near the Royal Arch for lunch/snack. Our pace will be comfortable for all participants. Overall ~4 miles and ~1600 ft elevation gain. (Royal Arch Loop - CalTopo)
