Hiking – Boreas Pass TH - Boreas Mountain

NOTE DATE CHANGE. A loop hike starting with diagonal Class 1-2 scrambling up the west side of Boreas Mountain across a boulder field and returning via the Black Powder Pass Trail. This Ascending Hike focuses on traveling on alpine tundra, route finding, following a route on an app or map, an easy intro to scrambling, working through willows, and high altitude hiking. Reserved for CMC members for whom these are new experiences. CMC veterans are free to sign up during the last 48 hours before trip day.

Meet at the southern dirt area in front of The Fort Restaurant at 6:45 am to set up carpools and a prompt drive-away. The address is 19192 CO-8, Morrison, just north of US 285 south.

We will make a comfort stop along the way at the Loaf N Jug at 172 Bulldogger Rd, Bailey.  We encourage everyone to buy a little something in exchange for use of their restrooms.  We'll then proceed through South Park and Como, up to Boreas Pass.

The RT mileage is 135 miles, making the carpool sharing cost about $48/car.

Starting at the Boreas Pass TH, we will hike diagonally up across a long boulder field.  Some easy (Class 1-2) scrambling required along the way.  We'll stay on the western side of the ridge until we reach a large gully, then regain the broad ridge just below the summit.

I will provide a gpx route and a map.  Each hiker should be prepared to help with route-finding up to the summit.

We will return along the long Boreas Mtn. ridge until we connect with the Black Powder Pass Trail. There will be more route-finding to reach the trail, likely navigating through thick willows between the ridge and the trail. The wildflowers on the way back should be abundant because of the Boreas Ditch stream.

I'll write a day or two ahead of time with updates and a weather forecast.

In addition to the ten essentials, a lunch and plenty of water.  Sun protection is a must at this elevation.  Suggest bringing hiking poles even if just to carry them in your pack as a few places may be tricky.
