Hiking – Boreas Mountain via Black Powder Pass Trail

Hike in the historic area of Black Powder Pass off of Boreas Pass Road above Como. The hike will start/end at 11,243 feet near the historic Section House that has kiosks about the history of the area. The hike will then follow the Black Powder Pass trail 1.7 miles to the Black Powder Pass at the saddle of Boreas and Bald Mountains at 12,165. From the saddle on Black Powder Pass, hike off trail on steep tundra and talus to summit Boreas Mountain that is Class 2, with an elevation of 13,082”. Although the hike is relatively short at 5.1 miles with 1693” gain out and back, it is at high elevation and a steady challenging gain with areas of loose talus to negotiate. The summit is unique with a trough configuration bordered by a steep rise that leads to the summit itself. Panoramic 360-degree views from the top are incredible.

Anyone who is fully COVID vaccinated is welcome to join the hike. The driving distance to the trailhead from Pueblo is 132 miles. Pueblo participants will meet at the former northside Kmart parking lot at 3415 N. Elizabeth St, Pueblo CO 81008 for a 5:00 am departure. People from Colorado Springs can determine their own car-pooling arrangements or meet at the Black Powder Pass Trailhead above Como on Boreas Pass Road at 8:00 am. GPS coordinates -105.96834, 39.41024.  Boreas Pass Road is a dirt road that is rough. rutted and narrow in places that can be accessed with 2WD when dry. The road is traveled more easily with an AWD.

Required Equipment

The hike starts at over 11,000 feet and is a steady gain to the summit. Wear layers and sun protection, bring hat/gloves with expecting wind at the summit, bring rain gear, lunch to be eaten at the summit, snacks to eat enroute, and 2-3 liters of water in addition to the other 10 essentials. We will have an optional celebratory tail-gating after the hike so bring a favorite beverage and camp chair.
