We will be starting by hiking the CDT west from Berthoud Pass. Here’s a Google Maps link to the “Berthoud Pass Parking Lot”: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZDx76LMfomNGrzV57
We will end our hike at the Second Creek Trailhead, 3 miles north/west on US40 from Berthoud Pass. Here’s a Google Maps link to the “Second Creek Trailhead”: https://maps.app.goo.gl/DLYHvK9S9nGj7Y2E9
This is a one-way hike, involving a car shuttle. We will start by heading west on the Continental Divide Trail (“CDT”) from Berthoud Pass. Upon reaching the ridgeline, we will head north on the Mt Nystrom Trail along the broad ridgeline to North and South Twin Cone. From there we will drop down into upper First Creek basin to the Broome Hut, then take the well-travelled trail down to the Second Creek Trailhead.
This hike has 1750 ft of elevation gain, but about 2500 ft of elevation loss due to the endpoint (Second Creek trailhead) being at a lower elevation than the starting point (Berthoud Pass).
