We'll start at the Barr Trail trailhead lot in Manitou at 8:15 a.m. so we can start hiking by 8:30. Parking at the lot is $37.50 on weekends so plan on meeting at Safeway on the west side to carpool to the trailhead. Carpooling is always voluntary but it not only splits the cost but decreases the traffic impact to the residents of that neighborhood. Details about other options and/or carpooling to follow. Snacks and hot drinks are available to purchase at Barr Camp but it's bring your own and DIY water filtration if you want to refill there.
I consider this the equivalent of many 14er hikes, albeit at lower elevations. Still, the first half is all up, with over 3700 feet of elevation gain. If you haven't been hiking and or working out regularly, this is not the place to start. Trail maybe snow packed and icy so have adequate traction. Bring layers and pack something warm to drink. If you are a member of the Pikes Peak Group and are interested in this hike please add yourself to the waitlist - spots will open as cancellations occur. If the parking costs present a barrier, contact the leader and we'll figure it out.
If you haven't made the trip to Barr Camp it is an historic oasis on the slopes of Pikes Peak, now in its second century. After the cardio workout to arrive, it's wonderful place to stretch out near the stove and enjoy a hot cup of coffee and a sandwich (especially if March is coming in like a lion). https://barrcamp.com/
