Exploring Nature – Echo Lake Park - Echo Lake Trail

Drop off your camp chair on the bank of Echo Lake near the picnic pavilion, and then stretch your legs with a short nighttime walk (1.5 miles out and back) along the Echo Lake trail out to the old Echo Lake Lodge. Return to the chairs and enjoy snacks while watching the peak of the Perseid Meteor shower.

Meet at the Wooly Mammoth Park N Ride, under the FF sign, at 7:20pm to organize carpools and leave at 7:30pm. We’ll make a rest stop at the Kum and Go in Idaho Springs before making the turn onto Rt 103 to the lake. I expect we will return to Wooly Mammoth around 10:30+/- depending on how many meteors we are spotting and the will of the group.

Sundown is around 8pm on August 13, and by 9:00 it should be dark enough to see the stars, and hopefully some meteors. Those who wish to stretch their legs between 8:15 and 9:00 can join a short (but dark) hike out to the old lodge and back. This is a flat hike, but we will need headlamps and care to be sure we do not trip over roots along the way. Those who would prefer to just sit and chat by the lake can choose that option.

The moon should be a waning crescent and hopefully it will be a clear, dark night.

This trip is weather dependent, and will be canceled if rain or mostly cloudy skies are predicted, as we won’t be able to see the meteors in a cloudy sky. I will email participants to confirm or cancel the trip on Saturday, Aug 12.
