BPX Trip – 3-Day: Camp Lake from West Branch TH

Join me this summer on an "Enjoy the Journey" BPX backpacking trip to Upper Camp Lake in the Rawah Wilderness ... NOTE: The emphasis of this trip is to "enjoy the journey" and not to rush to get to the destination and than back to the trailhead. NOTE: This trip is for BPX members only.

Notes on your leader: I'm out here to have a good time, and enjoy Colorado's backcountry. I try to create a friendly team dynamic and to be as inclusive as possible, considering everyone's abilities, experience, and needs out there. I ask the same of you. We stay together on my hikes, no exceptions. We're going to spend 3 days stink'in together, let's make it fun.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Hike from the trailhead to the campsite near Twin Crater Lakes (5.4 miles / 2,196 ft.) ... 

Starting at the West Branch trailhead follow the West Branch Trail (960) for 3.5 miles (+1,145, -127 ft.) to the intersection with the Rawah Trail (961). Turn right on the Rawah Trail and follow it for 1.5 miles (+870 ft.)to the intersection with the Twin Crater Lakes trail (962). Turn left on the Twin Crater Lakes Trail and follow it for about 0.5 miles (+200 ft.) until the first stream crossing where we will setup camp.

Optional hike from campsite to Twin Crater Lakes (2.1 miles / 472 ft.)

Day 2: Hike from near Twin Crater Lakes to Upper Camp Lake (6.4 miles / 1,340 ft.) ... Optional hike to/from Sheep Mountain from Grassy Pass (1.6 miles / 591 ft.)

Return to the Rawah Trail (961) via the Twin Crater Lakes Trail (0.4 miles, -200 ft.). At the intersection with the Rawah Trail turn left and follow the Rawah Trail for 1.8 miles (+791 ft.) to Grassy Pass.  Follow the Rawah Trail north for 0.9 miles (+97, -260 ft.) to the intersection with the Sandbar Lakes Trail (972). Turn right onto the Sandbar Lakes Trail and follow it for 1.25 miles (+53, -542 ft.) to the intersection with the Camp Lake Trail (968). Turn right onto the Camp Lake Trail and follow it for 1.0 miles (+153, -171 ft.) to the intersection with the Upper Camp Lake Trail (978). Turn right onto the Upper Camp Lake Trail and follow it for 1.0 miles (+244 ft.) to Upper Camp Lake where we will setup camp.

Route Day 2

Optional hike: At Grassy Pass head east and then north for 0.75 miles (+591 ft.) to the summit of Sheep Mtn. After enjoying the views from the summit return to the Rawah Trail (1.6 miles, -591 ft.).

Day 3: Hike from Upper Camp Lake back to the trailhead (8.4 miles / 398 ft.)

Return to the Camp Lake Trail (961) via the Upper Camp Lake Trail (1.0 miles, -244 ft.). At the intersection with the Camp Lake Trail turn right and follow it for 4.7 miles (+255, -1,349 ft.) to the intersection with the West Branch Trail (960). Turn left onto the West Branch Trail and follow it for 2.7 miles (+122, -992 ft.) to the West Branch Trailhead.
