We will meet near the Pikes Peak Entrance Gate at 5089 Pikes Peak Highway, Cascade, Co.
On Aug 27 we can enter the Pikes Peak Highway gate at 4:45 a.m., there is no charge. This early time is for their annual Sunrise Start Celebration. We will be entering with the public, so there will be a line. On Aug 28 entrance time will be at 6am. I will be sending you a placard to print and bring with you to enter. To minimize cars parked on the top, there are two areas we can use near the North Pole Santa’s Workshop, it’s within 100 yards of the Pikes Peak Gates. I will send you a map of their location. We will form carpools there and proceed to the Devils Playground lot. We are allowed 4 parking places on top so we may need to do some shuttling. Regardless of where you park leave your placard visible on your dashboard. Do not leave food, there are bears in the area, or valuables in your cars. On Aug 27, please arrive at 4:00 so all this can happen to enter the gate at 4:45am. On Aug 28, please arrive at 5:30 so we can enter at 6:00am.
More information sent to participant.
The Pikes Peak Group has been maintaining the A-Frame for the Forest Service since 1999. The A-Frame is located along the Barr Trail , near tree line at about 11,664 ft. The overall project: We were planning to carry Lumber, shingles and other supplies from the top of Pikes Peak down approximately 3 miles to the A-Frame on Aug 20-21. That weekends work was cancelled due to the weather. So this will be a joint effort, combining moving materials and construction work. We will be replacing the roof with new shingles, replacing front supports, painting the exterior and interior. When complete, old material and trash will be packed back to the top for disposal. Plans are to camp there Sat night as an option. We have enough folks to do the construction work but we do need material movers. You are signing up to help on Aug 27th & 28st.
If you are camping overnight, please have your tent, bag and personal gear. If not have your food / snacks / water / 10 essentials for the day. PPG will furnish all materials and tools. Also freeze-dried meals for the one night there. There is water at the A-Frame, we will have filters and stoves for warming water. This will not be an easy hike carrying material from 14,115 ft to 11,664 and returning. Be sure you are physically fit enough to hike up/down the trail at altitude carrying your gear and supplies as needed. If the trip is full, please go on Standby as we’re uncertain how many people are needed.
-There is no toilet at the A-Frame - Leave No Trace Principles apply for waste disposal. We will be using WAGBAG’s. We will furnish them.
Required Equipment
Folks working 1- day will need to have food / snacks / water, hiking poles are helpful for balance with a load, a rain jacket, fleece/puffy and whatever you use for a day in the mountains.
Folks working 2- days may camp at the A-Frame. There is space for about 5 to sleep inside. If you’d like to do that please indicate when you sign up. I’ll allocate space on first-come basis and indicate if you are inside or need your tent. You will need your sleeping bag and personal gear. You will need food / snacks for both days, we will provide a freeze-dried meal for Sat. night. Please indicate to me via email which days you are working, there's no place on the web sign up for that info. dwaits24@gmail.com
You may want to bring a larger pack.
We will be carrying down some tools, a few supplies and materials. We will be meeting in the Pikes Peak Warehouse. It is located on the south side of the building in the basement; as you are approaching the top parking lot there's a road going down to the right, walk down that road to the second door on the left. Materials and tools are stored there.
