Come out on a wonderful backpack to Colorado's first National Monument established in 1908 then downgraded in 1950 due to remoteness and lack of visitation.  The area was created as volcanic tuff by the La Garita Caldera explosion apx 30 million years ago.  It is now a Wilderness Area providing some protections from development and resource extraction.

We will drive down to the Hanson Mill TH and backpack in on Day 1.  We will explore the monument on Day 2 starting with early morning light for great photos.  We will backpack out and drive home on Day 3.  There may be time for fishing in the headwaters of West Bellows Creek as well.  Since much of the forest has died in this area, we will work hard on picking a safe camp area in case of storms and high winds.
